Koufonissi (can also be spelled Koufonisi, Koufonissia or Koufonisia) is one of the islands of the Lesser Cyclades in the Greek archipelago. Koufonissi is the colloquial name of the northern of the two neighboring islands Koufonissia, Pano Koufonissi, or Ano Koufonissi is the full name of the island and the neighboring island is called Kato Koufonissi. The islands are separated by an approx. 200 m wide strait.
Koufonissi is located between the larger islands of Naxos, Amorgos and Keros. The other Small Cyclades are Iraklia, Nísos Schoinoússa and Donoussa. The former independent municipalities in the Small Cyclades were merged in a reform in 2011 with Naxos to form the municipality "Naxos and Small Cyclades".
About 375 people live on the island year-round, and Koufonissi is the island in the Small Cyclades with the largest population. The main industries are tourism and fishing.
