The story of sunflower (Helianthus Annuus ) is indeed amazing. The wild sunflower is native to North America but commercialization of the plant took place in Russia. It was only recently that the sunflower plant returned to North America to become a cultivated crop. But it was the American Indian who first domesticated the plant into a single headed plant with a variety of seed colors including black, white, red, and black/white striped.

A Sunflower Field

Finally! We now added our first Sunflower field poster in our nature poster category. This is the start of something new, we actually just felt that we had to show our solidarity to the people of Ukraine, who has sunflowers as a national flower. But also as a start adding more motives of nature itself. There’s more to come, so stay tuned!

Cinque Terre Travel
Like pearls on a (very beautiful) thread. Find inspiration to Cinque Terre incl. instagram spots, beaches and art work.

Incredible views and new surprises around every corner, is what awaits you as you make your way along the winding paths and roads as you travel to the Cinque Terre with Escapeaway. Let yourself be seduced by this incredible area with five unique villages nestled on pearl ribbons. People like to travel far for picturesque fishing villages, panoramic views and beautiful natural scenery. And the Cinque Terre is just such a hit.

The Cinque Terre is beautifully situated along the eastern part of the Italian Riviera, on the border with Tuscany. The cities are located on rock outcrops, and offer a beautiful sea view. Here you will find the 5 small villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore in wonderful harmony. The picturesque villages can make most people lose their breath, and make the rest have shaky legs. Book a hotel, holiday house or holiday apartment in the Cinque Terre here.

A holiday among beautiful mountains and pleasant fishing villages

The Cinque Terre is a protected natural area, housing some of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy. Here, previous generations have worked the mountains, so that today they are full of vines and olive trees. It is only a few decades since the five cities became connected to the Italian road network. They have therefore retained their original charm with old fishing villages and churches. From Levanto or Punta Mesco, old hiking trails go to Monterosso. Monterosso is both artistically and naturally an attraction. Here is the old Aurora tower, which separates the old town from the new one, as well as the church of St. Francesco which is also worth a visit.

The Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The area is world famous for its wonderful hiking trails which connect the five coastal villages and call for an active holiday. Some of the trails can be used for mountain biking or a relaxing ride on horseback, but if you prefer to hike all the way from Monterosso to Riomaggiore, you should have a good pair of shoes and set aside a full day for the subject. It should be noted that the area has become a national park, which is why a fee is required along the road to visit the area.

From Monterosso to Riomaggiore

On the hike from Monterosso to Riomaggiore you are halfway there when you get to Corniglia. This is a great place to take a break and enjoy the lovely beach. From Corniglia you then continue along the bay to Manarola. Further from Manarola, take the road called Kärleksvägen. It runs along the rock wall and offers tough surroundings and a fantastic view of the sea.

The hiking system:

Open paths:
On the popular hiking trail (sentiero azzurro), which connects the five villages, and which is located with a fee, it is currently possible to hike on the stretches

  • Monterosso -> Vernazza
  • Vernazza -> Corniglia
  • Manarola -> Corniglia (may be periodically closed due to maintenance work)
  • Monterosso -> Madonna di Soviore -> Vernazza (long)
  • Monterosso -> Levanto (via Punta Mesco)
  • Manarola -> Volastra -> Corniglia (as a slightly more demanding alternative to the route Manarola -> Corniglia)
  • Manarola -> Riomaggiore, also called the Love Path
  • Campiglia -> Riomaggiore
  • Campiglia -> Portovenere
  • as well as many other hiking trails behind the villages in the Cinque Terre.

Furthermore, there are many free and less trafficked trails in the area, from which you can enjoy the sea air and dizzying panoramic views: e.g. the distances

Note: As the area is very mountainous, there are occasional landslides on the hiking network, which can mean that individual sections may be closed for shorter periods for the safety of visitors.

Sail or take the train between the villages

There is an incredibly good train connection between the villages, and the trains run several times an hour. But the villages are also connected by various boat trips, and it is an impressive sight to see from the sea. In severe weather, however, the tours are canceled, as most of the villages lack an actual port. The tickets for the tour boats can only be bought at the ticket booths on the quays in four of the villages (not in Corniglia which is too high), and not in the welcome centers that you usually find at the train stations.

Monterosso is the largest of the villages and the only one with a real beach – which makes it a perfect choice for families with children. Alternatively, the nearby villages of Moneglia and Levanto are recommended, which also have child-friendly beaches as well as a direct train connection to the villages of the Cinque Terre.
