Another legend posits that fishermen and farmers on the Amalfi Coast would drink limoncello in the mornings to ward off the chill and keep energized. Regardless of its precise origin, limoncello’s recipe—consisting of lemon zest, alcohol, sugar, and water—has stayed remarkably consistent.

The lemons used in authentic Italian limoncello come from the Sorrento variety, known for their thick, aromatic peels, ideal for releasing rich essential oils. These lemons are grown in terraced groves overlooking the sea, where the Mediterranean climate imparts a unique flavor and intensity to the fruit.
